New York's Finger Lakes region takes it's name from the 11 pristine, freshwater lakes placed like a handprint between Lake Ontario and the Pennsylvania border. The region encompasses 9,000 square miles. Glaciers carved out the Finger Lakes themselves as well as some of the beautiful surrounding landscape. Gorges and waterfalls can be found throughout the Finger Lakes region.

The Finger Lakes is one of best known regions in the world for the top-quality wines. Because of the lake's great depths, they provide a lake effect to the lush vineyards that flank the shores. While cycling along the ridgelines, we'll enjoy the patchwork of farms, vineyards and lake front communities. The area is a dream come true for water and outdoor activities. For the bicycling enthusiast, the choices are too many to take in a short 6-day tour. So we have chosen the "best' of the Finger Lakes.

Trip Itinerary:

Orientation Evening- July 28

Day 1- After a divine breakfast overlooking the waterfront,  we head south out of Skaneateles and make our way west to the shore of Cayuga Lake. It is a beautiful rural route to Ithaca. The ride will start with flat terrain, then get hillier as we approach the southern end of the lake. (riding miles up to 45)

Day 2- We'll climb away from the lake briefly on rolling farmland toward the highest waterfall in the Finger Lakes region. We navigate country roads that lead us to the shore of Seneca Lake, where we'll find Watkins Glen, our home for the night.  In the afternoon, there is time to hike a nearby spectacular gorge with numerous waterfalls and cliffs. 19 waterfalls can be found a 2 mile radius of Watkins Glen alone. Relax at sunset in the Adirondack chairs dotting the lakeshore on the patio of our inn. (riding miles 35-45)

Day 3- We have a big day on the bikes, so we will rise early to catch some of the best scenery on the lakes. We skirt country roads to charming Hammondsport, on the southern tip of Keuka Lake, where your guides will host a picnic lunch and optional visit to the Glen Curtis Museum.  This early pioneer of aviation got his start as a bicycle mechanic in this area, and tested and manufactured airplanes for many years in Hammondsport.  We soak up sparkling views of Keuka Lake and continue on to the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake.  Relax on your private balcony or opt for a wine tour before dining on site at the vineyard. (riding miles 47-71)

Day 4- You may choose an easier route today. Our itinerary allows for numerous opportunities to sample some award winning NY wines on the route to Geneva. Or opt for additional miles on the bike.  Geneva On The Lake, an elegant, old resort on the north shore of Seneca Lake is our rest stop for the next 2 nights.  We will dine on the moon-lit patio of the inn, weather permitting. (riding options 20-51 miles). Dinner is on your own this evening

Day 5- Don't pack up this morning, we will be back again for the evening. Like yesterday, we will have 2 riding options. The shortened version will allow you time back at the resort by lunchtime. You may want to venture into the charming downtown of Geneva or opt to take advantage of the many wonderful amenities of this special inn: a 70 foot swimming pool, formal gardens, and, in late afternoon, a ride on the inn's 24 foot pontoon boat.  The longer ride options take us through the patchwork of farms and estates that lie between the shorelines of Sceneca and Cayuga. (riding options 41 or 58 miles).

Day 6- We make our way back to Skaneateles today on flatter terrain, pedaling through the charming riverfront town of Seneca Falls, whose Main Street claims to be the inspiration for the movie "It's A Wonderful Life."  Take a few minutes to explore the Women's Rights National Historic Park. After lunch, opt to continue biking to Skaneateles or grab a van ride back to enjoy a stroll along the lakefront park, or the many shops and boutiques dotting the downtown area. (riding options 30-61 miles)

Elevation Maps will be ready soon.
